Strange Adaptions gallery - John Miller Gallery 2007

The watercolours in this exhibition have developed from drawings of spider webs, inspired by these delicate yet powerfully engineered structures that appear to float in space. The pictures have evolved from line drawings that mimic the methods of spiders and they have grown and accumulated colour and atmosphere from staining and washing and scrubbing.

The oil paintings are similarly developed as a response to natural forms yet are further abstracted, retaining mere vestiges of images. Rather, the forms are articulated by brushmarks, gestures and the surface manipulation of oil paint. They are as much about the painting materials, colour and physical qualities of paint as the natural forms that inspired them.
